The Groundsman will be responsible for undertaking a wide range of grounds maintenance duties on the Town Council’s land and sports facilities to the required standards. This role reports to the Grounds Manager and is based at our Hilltop Depot but will be moving to Birchwood Leisure Centre and Playing Fields later this year or early next year.

The key responsibilities: 

  • Undertake routine preparation and maintenance work on a range of sporting surfaces and facilities. To carry out all work using sound turf maintenance practices;
  • Set up sports pitches or amenity surfaces. Undertake minor construction and landscaping work;
  • To operate a range of horticultural machinery ensuring vehicles and equipment used by self and others are regularly maintained in accordance with routine operating requirements. Operation of powered hand tools, tractors and ride on machinery and line marking equipment is required;
  • Upkeep of artificial and synthetic surfaces;
  • Demonstrate awareness of Health and Safety for the individual and all others;
  • Ensure the safe use, storage, calibration and disposal of pesticides and other similar substances;
  • Ensure work area is kept clean, tidy and secure at all times;
  • Carry out such other tasks deemed necessary within the Grounds Department at the Line Managers discretion;
  • Work pattern is 5 days per week Monday to Friday working Summer hours April to September and shorter Winter hours October to March averaging 37 hours per week annually;
  • Be able to work occasional weekends, as required by the Line Manager, reasonable notice having been given and Town Council events such as Music Festival, Fireworks, Santa’s rounds etc.

Essential requirements: 

It is essential that the successful candidate has the following skills, aptitudes, qualifications and experience:

  • The ability to prioritise and delegate as well as working alone or as a team leader;
  • Good written and oral communications skills at all levels;
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance of relevant machinery;
  • A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, including some evenings and weekend work;
  • Knowledge and experience of working with synthetic sports surfaces would also be advantageous.

Type: One year fixed term contract. Shorter winter working hours will be reflected in salary payments. Summer hours are 37 hours per week rising to 42 hours per week max. for which overtime will be paid.

Hatfield Town Council are looking for staff to join their Holiday Playscheme team.  The role is school holidays only, Monday-Friday, 8.30am-6pm.

Those appointed will be responsible for providing and assisting with a programme of activities for children in Year 1-7, creating a positive, safe, and caring environment.  Activities can include; sports, arts and crafts, cooking and day trips.
