Hatfield
Town Twinning
The
twinning with Zierikzee took place nearly 50 years ago and developed
from the 1953 tragedy, when so many lives were lost during the floods
which devastated the Lowlands. The people of Hatfield contributed
to the flood relief fund, part of which was sent to Zierikzee and
from this action a lasting bond was formed.
Zierikzee is the principle
town on the island of Schouwen Duiveland, lying in the delta of
the Rhine and the Maas in the province of Zeeland. It has a delightful
old walled port with an ancient harbour dating back to the 9th Century.
The Town Council believes that the
links between Hatfield and its European counterpart is of enormous
value, particularly to our young people who benefit by directly
experiencing "normal" life in another country.
